Car Journey Games!

As we are in the hot summer months, and the school holidays are looming, it's likely that you might be taking a road trip with your family. Before the cries of "are we nearly there, yet?" get too much, I've put together some great car games for you to keep the whole family entertained.

This isn't an exhaustive list – I'd love to know what games you play in the car on a long journey too!

I Spy - The classic "I Spy" is a firm favourite with most families – no complicated rules, and even when you're stuck in traffic, there are things to spot. There is a slight downfall with this game if the passengers in the car have a problem with spelling, you could be guessing for hours!

There's Eddie – If you're travelling on the motorways of the UK, it's highly likely that at some point, you will see an Eddie Stobart truck, the first person to spot it gets a point, and the one with the most points at the end of the journey is the winner. Did you know that each Eddie Stobart truck is given a different female name? Perhaps you could keep a note of all the different trucks you see and become an official Eddie Spotter.

Car Bingo – this one takes a bit of organisation beforehand, but it can really pay off! Prepare a grid with different vehicles in (make them as specific or generic as you like, e.g. "Red Renault" or "Car") each passenger gets a grid and ticks off the vehicles as they are spotted, the first to get a full house is the winner!

The Suitcase Game - a real test of brain power for this one. As each person takes it in turns to recite "When I went on holiday, I packed…." And then mention something beginning with A-Z – but each new item has to be preceded by the previous items – can you remember them all?

1-100 – can you find all the numbers from 1-100, using car registrations, sign posts, sign written lorries/cars/vans etc -but they have to be in order, from 1-100.

Who Am I? each person takes it in turn to think of a famous person, and then the other passengers get 20 questions to ask in a bid to guess who it is. The questions can only be answered with a "Yes" or a "No" to make it a bit trickier.

Number Plate Letters - using the letters from the number plate of the car in front of you, make a sentence, or phrase – e.g if the registration ends NHA, you might say "No Hammers Allowed" or "National Happy Association" – each passenger gets a go and you decide which is the funniest.

Car Cricket - this one is a bit more taxing on the brain, and requires a score keeper with a pen and paper. The scores are equated as follows – Spot a Van =1 run, Car & caravan =2 runs, Lorry =4 runs, coach (specify the colour of it at the start of the game) = 6 runs, Emergency vehicle – OUT!

I hope you like these suggestions and they make for a pleasant journey to wherever you might be travelling to – let me know which ones are your favourites, as well as any others that I need to add to the list for next year.
